HafenCity Hamburg is a comprehensive urban development on land which was formerly part of the city’s port facilities. It borders with the World Cultural Heritage Site of the Speicherstadt, the historic center of Hamburg, and the port area, comprising Europe’s second largest port.

Initially conceived as a fragment of necessary restructuring operations to update port facilities in the 1990s HafenCity gradually developed into a flagship development of the City of Hamburg. This shift allowed to increase the mix of uses and spatial qualities in the area and to focus on the urban qualities and connection to the existing city.

The HafenCity Hamburg provides an interesting case to study an elaborate stakeholder and project development process which is contributing a great share to the success of the project. If further offers a great example to study the conversion of former port facilities into an extension of a vibrant city centre.
