FCL Global, SUTD, NUS, bioSEA, and Arup Launch ‘Urban Ecological Corridors’ Research Project

Launch of ‘Urban Ecological Corridors’ research project

Researchers and experts from Future Cities Laboratory Global, the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), the National University of Singapore, biosea.sg, and Arup have officially launched the research project ‘Urban Ecological Corridors: Multifunctional Corridors for People and Ecology.’ Led by Prof. Dr Thomas Schroepfer (Principal Investigator) and Dr Srilalitha Gopalakrishnan (Co-Principal Investigator), the project brings together leading expertise in urban ecology, landscape architecture, and sustainable urban development.

The kick-off meeting took place on February 11, 2025, at the URA Centre, with the participation of key partner government agencies in Singapore. The project aims to develop a quantitative understanding of urban ecological corridors’ performance, enhancing their ability to support both biodiversity and human activity. The research will result in evidence-based guidelines and strategies for the development of resilient and multifunctional ecological corridors while establishing methodologies for long-term monitoring and assessment of their effectiveness as urban connectors.

Supported by a $2.75 million grant under the Ministry of National Development Singapore’s Cities of Tomorrow (CoT) programme, this initiative will contribute to the future of sustainable urban infrastructure by integrating ecological resilience with urban connectivity.
