Overview:

Biomimicry is about looking at nature’s best ideas and applying them to human designs. Biomimetic designs are particularly relevant for tropical climates where diversity of well-adapted strategies exist in nature that can be easily mimicked. bioSEA has launched a toolkit titled ‘external pageBiomimicry for Tropical Building Skins – A Design Toolkit to Manage Thermal Comfort Using Nature’s Genius’ in April 2023 in Singapore. Made possible with support from DesignSingapore Council, the toolkit is envisioned as a practical design guide to mainstream the adoption of nature-inspired innovation in the tropical built environment.

This is important because cooling the world is warming the planet. 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions can be attributed to the cooling services industry. The toolkit features bioSEA’s own designs inspired by the Elephant Skin, Desert Beetle and Termite Mounds and published case studies that showcase the application of biomimicry across scale, taxonomy and stage of commercialization relevant for the tropical climate. Finally, we paint a vision of deeply integrating biomimicry with other bio’s namely biophilia, bio-morphism and bio-utilization. The ideas presented can eventually support efforts towards the adoption of Super Low Energy Buildings and expedite transition towards Zero Carbon and Regenerative Buildings.
