KANG Jidong

Jidong joined the module Power the City in FCL Global in Oct. 1, 2022. His major role in this programme is to evaluate the socioeconomic impacts of distributed energy systems in urban context and make policy recommendations based on the evaluation results.

He has focused on the energy system modelling and policy analysis for many years with various techniques, e.g., index decomposition analysis and optimization model. By using index decomposition analysis, he explored the driving forces of energy consumption and CO2 emissions in China in different sectors (e.g., industrial and electricity sectors) in the past decades. Then, the effectiveness of underlying policies and measures for CO2 emissions reduction in those sectors are evaluated and future policy recommendations for CO2 emissions reduction are provided. The related works were published on peer-reviewed journals such as Energy Policy (2015, 87, 28–38) and Energy Economics (2017, 67, 268-77). Besides, by using optimisation modelling techniques, he investigated the optimal decarbonisation pathways in China’s electricity and transport sectors in the future, based on which the long-term policy analysis and recommendations behind the modelling results for decarbonizing power and transport sectors in China are provided. The related works were published on peer-reviewed journals such as European Journal of Operational Research (2020, 287, 280-292), Environmental Science & Technology (2020, 52, 2, 697-706), and Energy Economics (2021, 104, 105623).

Prior to his PhD studies, he obtained a Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering from Tianjin university and a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from Hunan University and worked in FAW-Volkswagen Automotive company Chengdu branch as an Industrial Engineer for three and half years. After his PhD studies, he worked in Energy Studies Institute in NUS for two years, focusing the development of energy system optimisation models for high-density urban systems.
