Dr GAO Tongchaoran (Chloe)
Since her Ph.D. studies, Dr. Gao’s passion lies in understanding the social impacts of spatial designs using real-life data analysis. Her research focuses on analyzing diverse types of data generated from public spaces of high-rise neighborhoods, to nurture the community bonds, elevate mental health and promote neighborhood entrepreneurship.
The informality in the lived space has always been the highlight of her studies, as she believes the informal spatial features, despite their chaotic appearance, are the most efficient communication channel between designers and inhabitants.
Research Interests
Dr. Gao’s Ph.D. dissertation has successfully established a method to use residents’ spatial appropriation data to analyze neighborhood interaction atmosphere. This work has led to meaningful insights, including the identification of key spatial factors that associate with a desirable atmosphere, for example enhancing daily interaction between residents of the same floor.
Her current project in SEC aims to perform community detection using raw-GPS data and evaluate the social performance of the public space in sustainable integrated districts (SIDs).
